The last time I had a relaxer was 6 months, 1 day ago. I am in the transition of going fully natural because… I wanna see what it would be like!
So four weeks go from Monday, I took on the challenge of putting yarn into my hair (hence the name “yarn braids”). According to my research, they kind of resemble dread locs. I was so tired of trying to figure out protective styles for my transitioning hair… I needed a break… figured I could put them in myself since I can crochet and I know my way around yarn. So I looked at a lot of YouTube videos (some I repeated) and I did it… and I succeeded! 😀 It took me 12 hours which includes breaks, eating, and using the restroom. So it wasn’t too bad.
So… PROS an CONS of wearing the yarn braids in my hair:
PROS–> (1) I didn’t have to do extra stuff to my hair. All I did was moisturize and put it in a ponytail. Sometimes I did let it down. (2) I tricked a lot of people who thought that I was locking up (i.e. Getting dread locs). (3) I received a lot of compliments! (4) Wrapping it wasn’t too bad either. (5) I felt like I had long hair 😀 and (6) I did receive some new growth.
CONS–> (1) Washing it wasn’t too bad. The drying process was the problem. It took a whole day and a half to fully dry. I tried protecting the ends of the braids from the water to prevent the heaviness, but half of the time I was unsuccessful. (2) When I took them out, my hair was SOOOOO tangled. Not the entire strand of hair… but from the demarcation line to the ends of my hair was the most difficult to detangle. It took me two days (and yet I still don’t think I got it all) and I did lose some hair due to detangling. And my head hurt! (Maybe I yanked a few times but I don’t do well with extremely-tangled hair.)
So… you probably wanna know the answer to this question… Would I wear these yarn braids again?
Yes I would! This was my first time wearing them… so I know what I could do differently and what other ideas I have in mind. Maybe in the next month or two.
In the mean time… I need to figure out what products I can put into my hair now. I’m really having a problem with my scalp. It’s so itchy! Oh, and what kind of styles I can do. My hair is short and it stops at my neck… so I really don’t know what to do with my hair other than bantu knots (which takes some times to do) and one updo hairstyle that requires a few bobby pins. I guess you can call it a transitioning hair plateau :-p
Oh and by the way… ALL POSITIVE AND USEFUL TIPS FOR ME ARE WELCOME! 😉
Well… that’s it! Take care!
