It’s been a while since I’ve done one of a book review. To be honest, it’s been a while since I’ve made time to disconnect with the world in the form of books. At this moment in life, I had to learn what works best for me when it came to reading. Audible has been helping me a lot! I’m also in a book club to help me too. So here is one of the books that we’ve been reading so far! Sleep in peace, Eric Jerome Dickey.
Here are my thoughts:
- Jimi Lee GETS ON MY NEERRRVVVVEEEEESSSSSS. At the same time, she was 18, stuck between wanting to make her parents proud, be free of her conservative strick Ethiopian culture, being a young mom, going down a path that is considered “ghetto” …should I go on? She’s a hot mess and prejudice and her daughter has to suffer! She kept talking about, “I should’ve/could’ve/would’ve…” and I kept thinking like, “Giiiiirrrrrlllllllllll, if you don’t shut up! Now ya ain’t! Hush up and change the course!” She got on my nerves bringing up his self-defense with Markoviak. Yep, it was self-dense even though he was there for a crazy reason.
- Even though he had a rough job, I feel so bad for Ken Swift. He never wanted to be disrespectful to Jimi no matter how disrespectful she was to him. I assume it was the southern man in him.
- It’s crazy how this book was a mixture of erotic and a cultural disconnection between black people in America and 1st gen. African Americans from Africa. One thing I’ve heard is that some immigrants from the “baby boomer” gen. do think differently about black people in America and they taught their children.
- I was thoroughly amused with chapters 36 and 37. This is Leilah’s MOMENT to spill some TEA honey! …but no condom tho?! LOL! Am I the only one who wonders if Jimi’s friend, Leilah, and Ken would have been a good couple? Or maybe it’s the fact that they were able to talk about the disconnect between Africans and Black people a whole lot better without judgment. *ques “She Was a Friend of Mine” by Kelly Price*
- I wish there was a loophole where Ken could see his daughter. I wish he would’ve worked harder to see Margo, regardless of how crazy Jimi’s family is! I hate the fact that Margo was brainwashed into believing that her father “abandoned” her. Ugh!
- WHHYYYY DID SHE NEED $50,000?! I get that this was a post-prequel… but I don’t like cliffhanger books. Now, I have to make the choice of either allowing the cliff to hang or invest in reading the other book. Ugh!
- Listening to the Audible is SO MUCH BETTER!
Overall, I give the book a 4 out of 5 stars.
