Happy Valentine’s Day

It’s no secret to many that I love to read, and it’s no secret to a couple of people that I don’t always have the discipline of reading non-fiction books. I always refer to it as feeding my imagination more than feeding into my life. Plus, it takes me way too long to finish one since I have to let certain chapters marinate mentally. However, I wanted to challenge myself and read more non-fiction books this year. I started the year off by reading a book by Tiffany Haddish. I saw her in a movie called “Girls Trip” (worth the watch) and thought she was hilarious and crazy (in a good way). Then I saw some of her interviews on the internet and immediately put her book on my Amazon wishlist. Little did I know, one of my best friends has already bought it for me as a Christmas gift! So in this blog you will find my review on two books: The Last Black Unicorn by Tiffany Haddish and Dreams of the Heart by Tanela Hicks. Alright, let’s get started!

The Last Black Unicorn
Tiffany Haddish
Published: Dec. 5, 2017
Genre: Non-Fiction, Inspirational

Summary: This book tells the life of Tiffany Haddish in her own unique way. (Refer to GoodReads or Amazon for a more in-depth summary. That’s all I got for you *lol*)

Review: I recently learned that books about a celebrity’s life are a lot more interesting to me. Surprisingly, I wouldn’t wait to read it despite the controversy of how some things weren’t true in the book. Since I read books by both Trevor Noah and Maurice White, I figured this book had to be interesting. This book took me two weeks to finish, which was the fastest time to ever read a non-fiction book in my adult life. Okay. So about this book… I thought it was very engaging. I never felt like I wanted to skip a few pages to make the reading process go quicker. Each chapter caught my attention and I didn’t really want to put it down. Not to mention, there were a few chapters that had me laughing my butt off. (I don’t want to say which chapters, but I will say it’s in the middle of the book somewhere.) Some pages even had me wanting to read it again to reiterate how I felt after reading it. Overall, I really enjoyed reading the book. Despite the controversy, Tiffany Haddish has been through a lot and had some stories to tell that were true to me without a doubt. Even though she doesn’t know me, I’m very proud of her and of the entertainer she is today. I hope you will invest your time and money into this book. It’s worth it.

Dreams of the Heart
Tanela Hicks
Published: Sept. 30, 2017
Genre: Romance, Inspirational, Fiction

Summary: The setting of this book is in Dallas, Texas. Jamice Watts works at an event planning company as the most sought out event planner in the city. She is very professional at what she does and makes sure everything is done perfectly. However, little do people know, Watt goes home nightly with internal demons and issues that she can’t seem to shake… until a farmer/horse trainer, named Greyson, shows up. According to the book’s summary on Amazon, “This heart-warming romance follows Jamice and Greyson as they struggle with the wounds of the past and the uncertainties of the future.

Review: Okay, I’m not going to lie: I thought this was going to be difficult to review since this is my good friend, and I wanted to make an unbiased review. (Of course I want my friends to flourish.) However, it wasn’t that hard because I thoroughly enjoyed the book. For me, a good book is when you are able to read it all day because you can’t seem to put it down… or you have to make time to finish reading a chapter (or two… or maybe just the rest of the book) after being a responsible adult by hastily taking care of “important” things that have nothing to with reading. Any book that won’t allow me to physically put the book down is a winner to me… and this was one of those books. I thought each character had a fair chance of recognition in the book. Dreams of the Heart was engaging and had a good plot. Each scene had a reason and a purpose. While I was reading, there were some times where I could tell this was my friend writing it because of how she describes each scene. (Not a bad thing btw; I just wanted to mention that, and I’m sure that I’m not alone in this regard.) Additionally, I thought the book ended well. An ending of a book is so important to me. It’s a standalone book, so it’s suppose to end correctly and not as a cliff-hanger, right? Well, some books I’ve read needed a better ending (*begins to sip Oolong tea*). Lastly, there’s always “what if” and “what will happen to” types of questions that pop up in my head after reading a good book. For example, what will happen to Jamice and Greyson? I do see this book having a sequel… but it would have to be a solid sequel though. Most books have sequels that turn out poorly done… or gives the reader permission to say that the “first one was better.” Nevertheless, I am confident that this would open doors to a really good sequel… that’s if the author wants to do one 😉 I do recommend this book for people to read! Plus, it’s a great book to read for Valentine’s Day

Just for fun: If this book was made into a movie, then I can see Stephanie Edwards playing Jamice and Aldis Hodge playing Greyson. You’ll get what I’m saying once you read the book 😉
