Where are all my Book Lovers at???

I know some have to exist in a world that loves Social Media. This 2nd half of the year had me catching up on my reading, and of course I have to write some reviews on it.

My Life with Earth, Wind, and Fire

Maurice White & Herb Powell, Foreword by Steve Harvey, Afterword by David Poster

Published on Sept. 13, 2016

Non-Fiction, Memoir

My Life with Earth, Wind & Fire by [White, Maurice, Powell, Herb]

The memoir was just that – a biography, written by Herb Powell, based on the perspective of Maurice White and how he developed Earth, Wind, and Fire (EW&F) to the iconic band that it is today. It went from White’s childhood to his experience at the Hollywood Bowl. The memoir ended with thoughts from Powell and him working alongside White with this book until he died. There were also pictures of EW&F in many places, like Egypt and the White House.

I’ll be honest with you and say that I don’t always go for non-fiction books. They take too long to read for me and I lose interest quickly. Therefore I started this book sometime last year and put it on the back burner. However, after listening to an amazing book called Trevor Noah’s “Born a Crime: Stories From a South African Childhood (Unabridged),” I wanted to give this book a try. (Click HERE if you want to read my review on that book. It’s considerably one of my favorite non-fiction books.) It was a very informative memoir about White’s love and sacrifice for music. Normally people would get some things wrong in a biography. However, I assume that everything written was correct since Powell and White worked together up to the day of his death.

I love music so reading this memoir was refreshing. All I knew was that EW&F was a band that made cool songs. (I grew up a little ol’ skool.) Reading about the hardships were inspiring and gave a newly-found respect for EW&F. I don’t want to give anything away; just know that this was an interesting read and an eye-opener. If you love music, I’d recommend this book. It’s a bit lengthy, but worth reading nonetheless.

Everything We Keep

Romance

Everything We Keep: A Novel by [Lonsdale, Kerry]

I heard about this book when my church had a book club earlier this year. To be quite honest I didn’t have the time to read anything leisurely at my old job until now. And I didn’t feel like reading anything other than my daily devotion. Nevertheless, I did remember the small synopsis that someone tried to convince us to read (and they succeeded) and picked the book back up to work on. I was told that a woman lost her fiance and had the funeral on their scheduled wedding day, but eventually found love again. So I thought it was going to be a sappy love renewal story, but there was more that small synopsis than I imagined after reading the book. So much more!
I was intrigued with this book the entire time while reading it. Every character was given an important role in Aimee’s life. The best part is that no one mysteriously left off the face of this book; and if a character did disappear, then it was done properly and they served their purpose of the chapter. I also like the fact that this book has discussion questions for those who are in a book club, great discussion questions. Overall, it was an amazingly good book and I wonder if there will be apart two. The book was great as a standalone novel, however it did leave me with some questions:

What happened to Phillip?!

What will happen to James (Carlos)?

What was really in the casket??? (I’m not convince it was what it said it was in the book *begins to sip Oolong tea*)

Great job. Kerry did her good writing and it’s considered one of my favorite books now!

Enough

J. Asmara

Enough by [Asmara, J.]

Published on March 20, 2016

Romance, Drama, Fiction (Ages 18+ definitely)

Before reading the book I thought of the movie Enough, starring Jennifer Lopez, so I thought the it was going to give me some “I’m tired of the way things are and I’ll fight you until you’re dead” type of vibes. I still think it did kinda but not how I expected it to be. That’s a good thing because the book was unpredictable, which is a quality I look for in any book.

The book gives the life of three different scenarios that comes into one, so keep that in mind. It had me hooked from beginning to end. Each character was crazy in their own right. This book will also have you rooting for characters to either succeed and live a better life or stop what they’re doing because they’re idiots. Without giving too much of the book away, I do have one favorite character named Jamya. That’s all I’ve say! The ending to the book had a twist that I didn’t expect at all, but it was still a good book nonetheless. I would recommend people to read the book if you like some good drama. It does have some adult scenes so I don’t recommend this book if you’re under the age of 18.
