Why do I have a playlist about black women empowerment? Good question!
Maybe I was on one *shrugs* or maybe because I thought that we need a pick-me-up every now and then! This originated when I began paying attention to the songs that some Naturalistas put as their background music on Instagram. After that I did some YouTube searching and found some songs (minus one) that are now in my special playlist anytime I need a pick-me-up like the cup of coffee that I don’t drink.
Here are ten songs that I think promote self-love and appreciation for natural hair and black women in general.
Disclaimer: I do not own the rights to these songs. All rights belong to their owners.
- Acronym – “Nubian Delight” | Let me first start by saying that we as women do not need a man’s approval of how beautiful we look. The Temptations said it best when they mentioned that “beauty’s only skin deep.” However, this is song right here makes me feel like there are some men out there who appreciates women for their natural features, such as the texture of their hair in it’s natural state. He even mentioned how hard it is to detangle our hair. Bruh! I’m sold.
- Alicia James – “Love Me so Naturally” | I like this song because it’s promoting self-love. Don’t mistake it for being conceited; rather, I think it’s saying that I’m fly and I don’t need anybody to tell me otherwise *flips invisible weave*
- David Sha – “Her Hair (Natural Hair Anthem)” |I mean… who doesn’t love a song about a man appreciates a woman’s hair? I also think it’s kind of funny because of one line… “I love her hair ‘cause it’s real.” *lol* but all of the lyrics are solid in my opinion. In addition, this song mentions love for black boys as well!
- India Aire – “I Am Not My Hair” (feat. Akon) |This playlist isn’t right without India! This song more than just natural hair; rather it promotes loving who you are and not being defined by what your hair looks like, whether male or female. This is the only song that came to mind when I first chopped a lot of my hair off in 2014.
- JNES – “Official Natural Hair Anthem” |Okay, okay! I have a confession: I like to listen to ratchet music every now and then. There, I said it! This is a cute song with a ratchet beat, and it makes you want to turn the volume up. It’s for girls with natural hair 😉
- J’odie – “African Woman” |This is a song promoting the joy of being an African woman. Even though I was born and raised in Africa, I still think it’s something I want in my playlist because it promotes self-love. Plus it makes me want to dance!
- Kota Santez – “Black is Beautiful” |This is also a song promoting self love, but it’s not just any type of self love. It’s about the love of being black. With all that’s going on in the world today, and feeling like the world is against us, it’s good to hear a song for us.
- Qu’ality – “NA-TU-RAL” |This is another song that shows a man’s love for a woman with textured hair. I was sold when he mentioned protective styles and Carol’s Daughter (even though I’ve never used that brand before).
- Shameless Maya – “I Don’t Care (About My Frizzy Hair)” |The title to this song is self-explanatory and the lyrics are simple. Sometimes, I really don’t care about whether not my hair is frizzy… and sometimes I do *lol* From the lyrics to the music video, this song is super cute and kind of funny 😀
- S’Quire “Black Queens” |This song is about promoting self love for black women. We are black queens and there’s nothing wrong with it. Not to be confused with conceited, but it does enhance your confidence… not give it to you because you should already have that stored inside you 🙂 I was sold when he mentioned grape seed oil and olive oil.
There are a lot more songs out there that promotes self-love. These songs are a bit old and I do not know where these were when I was searching the internet for new music, but they’re new to me 😀
So what songs do you like to listen to in order to enhance your confidence and motivation? I’d love to know 🙂 Write it in the comment section and let’s empower one another!
